Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC) Tutors - West Neighbourhood House

The Adult Literacy and Academic Upgrading Program provides one-to-one and small group learning to adults in the community.

As part of the program, we support learners to write the Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC). CAEC is the new test that leads to an Ontario High School Equivalency Certificate. It replaced the GED.

Volunteer Duties:

  • We are looking for tutors to do one or both of the following:
  • Tutor a small group of learners in: English, math, social studies and/or science at a high school level
  • Provide individual support in a drop-in setting
  • As the CAEC is a relatively new test, there are limited resources available. Tutors will have access to any materials we do have but will be encouraged to develop new resources to support learners.
  • Keep a record of learning
  • Maintain communication with program staff

Skills Required:

  • Must have a minimum of a grade 12 education; post-secondary education is a strong asset
  • Additional subject-related skills are required. These will be discussed during pre-screening.
  • All components require an ability to teach critical thinking skills
  • Must have an interest in working with adults
  • Past teaching or tutoring experience is an asset but not required

Orientation & Training:

  • Those interested in volunteering with the program are encouraged to complete both the Application Form and the Adult Literacy Questionnaire. Once submitted, these forms will be forwarded to the Adult Literacy team, who will arrange a pre‑screening meeting. If both the volunteer and the team decide to move forward, the next step will be to attend an Orientation Session with the Volunteer Program.
  • Initial and ongoing training on CAEC and the tutoring relationship will be provided
  • On-going support from staff

Program Time & Location:

  • 1033 King Street West (Wheelchair Accessible)
  • Groups and drop-in sessions take place weekdays: Monday and Friday 9 – 5 and Tuesday to Thursday  9 – 9

Volunteer Commitment:

  • Three hours per week:  1 hour of preparation and 2 hours of tutoring
  • 6 months commitment required
