Volunteers would be responsible for delivering the meal directly to the client’s home and pausing briefly to talk and observe their general condition.
As a member of this team you will play a very important role in the lives of people who may have very limited contact with the outside world. Your friendly smile and genuine care for people in difficult circumstances will make a world of difference to those you deliver meals to.
Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:
- Friendly demeanor
- Cycle the route and distribute the meals carefully, watching for special diets
- Pause to talk and observe the general condition of each person
- Review the route map
- Check to ensure all meals are in stack
- Return empty trays to the Meals on Wheels lounge (reporting any that are missing)
- Report back to staff with any observations and messages when finished
- Inform the Meals on Wheels staff at least three days in advance if unable to volunteer
Requirements:
• Must enjoy working with people
• Must have an interest in seniors and disabled persons’ issues
• Must be friendly, reliable, patient, non-judgmental and non-discriminating
• Must have a bike and helmet
• Confidence cycling in the city
• Orientation Session with Volunteer Coordinator
• Background Check is required
Orientation, Training and Benefits:
• Staff provides orientation and training before volunteers are placed in the program
• On-going support provided by staff
• On-going training workshop opportunities and get-togethers provided throughout the year
Program Days and Times:
Currently looking for cyclists on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10 am to 11:30 am
Volunteer Commitment:
• Minimum of 6 months, 1 shift weekly or bi-weekly
