Description & Details
The Meals on Wheels Program offers healthy, affordable meals to seniors and people living with disabilities in the downtown West-end community. This service is an integral role in supporting independence and connection.
Deliveries are done in pairs. The volunteer Driver uses their own vehicle to deliver meals with a Runner. A detailed map is supplied of the route to be covered, with all stops clearly marked. A “MEALS ON WHEELS ” sign is used on the windshield to alert other motorists that a delivery is in progress. The driver may assist the “runner” deliver meals when possible.
Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:
- Friendly disposition
- Review the route map
- Drive the route
- Return stacked empty trays to the Meals on Wheels lounge (reporting any that are missing)
- Assist runner with any client information
- Inform the Meals on Wheels staff at least three days in advance if unable to drive
- Participation in volunteer related training workshops
Skills/ Qualifications Required:
- Must enjoy working with people
- Must have an understanding in challenges faced by seniors and/or participants living with a disability
- Must be friendly, reliable, patient, non-judgmental and non-discriminating
- Must have a recently completed Police Check, or be willing to complete one prior to their volunteer start date
- Must have a valid G Drivers Licence
- Must have a recently completed Drivers Abstract, or be willing to complete one prior to their volunteer start date
Orientation, Training and Benefits:
- Staff provides orientation and training before volunteers are placed in the program
- On-going support provided by staff
- On-going training workshop opportunities and get-togethers provided throughout the year
- Mileage stipend provided
Program Time:
- Monday through Saturday: 10 am – 1 pm *Greatest need: Wednesday and Friday
Volunteer Commitment:
- Once a week (or every other week); flexible according to volunteer’s schedule
- Minimum of 3-6 months
