Newcomer Youth Program is seeking volunteers (18 years old and older) to assist in a weekly Homework Help program. Homework Help aims to provide youth with one-to-one support for assignments and tutoring. The program promotes engagement among newcomer youth and volunteers, and aims to be a supportive, encouraging learning environment for newcomer youth between 13-24 years of age. Volunteers will be pre-screened by program staff before proceeding with the onboarding process.
Volunteer Duties:
- Help youth with homework assignments and/or class material as needed.
- Use of Zoom platform to deliver some tutoring sessions for youth.
- Connect with youth and foster a positive, inclusive, and stimulating environment.
Skills Required:
- Valid Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) or willing to get one upon onboarding.
- Strong knowledge of one or more high school subjects, particularly in Biology, Math, Coding, and Science.
- Experience working with youth is an asset.
- Must have excellent English-speaking skills.
- Ability to speak Farsi, Arabic, Pashto, Dari, Spanish, or Tagalog is an asset.
- Must have experience using Zoom as a platform for meetings.
- Must be friendly, open, reliable, patient, non-judgmental and non-discriminating.
- Must have good interpersonal and communication skills.
- Must have cross-cultural sensitivity.
- Must be able to commit on a weekly basis, and able to attend in-person either at the Parkdale Public Library, on select dates, or at West Neighbourhood House’s 248 Ossington Avenue location.
Orientation & Training:
- Staff provide orientation when volunteer starts.
- Staff provide on-going support.
Program Time:
- Mondays from 4:30 pm – 6:30 pm. Starting September 22nd, 2025.
- Weekly at West Neighbourhood House 248 Ossington Av. Select dates at the Parkdale Public Library, located at 1303 Queen St. W, Toronto.
