Adult Literacy Tutor – English/Math The Adult Literacy Program helps English-speaking people in the west part of Toronto learn to read, write in English and do Math at a basic/intermediate level. One on one and small groups tutoring.
Volunteer Duties: ·Work one-to-one with a learner or small group to improve their literacy skills ·Groups: Should be comfortable working with one other tutor and a small group of 2 to 5 learners, -working mainly on math at a basic level ·Keep a journal/record of learning ·Self-development through literacy resource material
Skills Required: ·An interest in Literacy and Adult education; English writing and reading and/or Basic Math skills ·Be friendly, open, reliable, patient, non-judgmental and non-discriminating
Orientation & Training: ·Questionnaire and initial interview with program staff ·Staff provides 15 hour tutor training sessions, including an anti-discrimination training (3 times per year – spring \ fall \ winter), that is mandatory for tutors. Next will be in April ·On-going support provided by staff ·On-going training workshop opportunities throughout the year
Program Time & Location: ·Virtual opportunity with possibility to become in person ·Classes and one-one tutoring sessions take place weekday evenings
Volunteer Commitment: ·Once a week (Monday to Friday) for 3 hours total: 1 hour of preparation and 2 hours of the tutoring session ·One year to ensure continuity in the relationship (6 months for certain group roles) |
