The Adult Literacy Program helps English-speaking adults in the West-end of Toronto learn to read, write in English and practice Math at a basic/intermediate level through small groups and individual tutoring sessions.
We are currently working in person but virtual options may be available.
The Adult Literacy Program helps English-speaking adults in the West-end of Toronto learn to read, write in English and practice Math at a basic/intermediate level through small groups and individual tutoring sessions.

Volunteer Duties:
- Work one-to-one with a learner or a small group to improve literacy and/or basic math skills
- Keep a journal/record of learning
- Maintain communication with program staff
Skills Required:
- An interest in literacy or numeracy (math), adult education and community development
- Listening, speaking and writing skills in English
- Patient, friendly, punctual and reliable
- Understanding of issues faced by marginalized communities
- Have an open mind and believe that all people can learn
- Practice social justice and anti-oppression principles
Orientation & Training:
- Questionnaire, interview and introductory workshop with program staff
- Staff provides 10 – 12 hours of tutor training, including an anti-discrimination training (3 times per year: spring, fall, winter), that is mandatory for tutors
- On-going support provided by staff
Program Time & Location:
- Tutors and learners meet at 1033 King St. West (Wheelchair accessible with washroom facilities)
- Classes and one-one tutoring sessions take place weekday mornings, afternoons and evenings
- Some virtual options available
Volunteer Commitment:
- Once a week for 3 hours total, 1 hour of preparation and 2 hours of the tutoring session to be scheduled during our opening hours Monday and Friday 9am – 5pm and Tuesday – Thursday 9am – 9pm
- One year to ensure continuity in the tutoring relationship
