West Neighbourhood House is a social service agency in Toronto’s downtown west end. In partnership with our neighbours, West Neighbourhood House strives to find solutions to problems, expose current issues and develop services relevant to our diverse community.
The Adult Literacy Program helps English-speaking adults in the west end of Toronto learn to read and write in English and use math at a basic/intermediate level. We do this through small groups and individual tutoring sessions.
We are currently looking for both in-person and virtual tutors.
Volunteer Duties:
Work one-to-one or in a small group to improve one or more of the following:
- literacy
- basic math
- digital skills
- Plan lessons and keep a record of learning
- Maintain communication with program staff
Skills Required:
- Ability to read, speak and understand English
- Belief in social justice and anti-oppression principles
- Willingness to learn about issues faced by marginalized communities
- Patience and reliability
- A belief that all people can learn
Orientation & Training:
- Those interested in volunteering with the program are encouraged to complete both the Application Form and the Adult Literacy Questionnaire. Once submitted, these forms will be forwarded to the Adult Literacy team, who will arrange a pre‑screening meeting. If both the volunteer and the team decide to move forward, the next step will be to attend an Orientation Session with the Volunteer Program.
- Once onboarded by Adult Literacy staff, volunteers will participate in a mandatory 10 – 12 hour tutor training sessions, including an anti-discrimination component.
- On-going support from staff
Program Time & Location:
- Tutors and learners meet at 1033 King St. West
- Groups and one-one tutoring sessions take place weekdays: Monday and Friday 9 am to 5 pm and Tuesday to Thursday 9 am to 9 pm.
Volunteer Commitment:
- Three hours per week: 1 hour of preparation and 2 hours of tutoring
- One year to allow for relationship building and to ensure continuity in learning
